STORY OF MIRIS

Miris began from a very personal place. In 2018, founder Shivani Tyronne was looking to start something of her own after taking a career break to care for her young son. Returning to the workforce as a new mother was not easy; nearly 70 companies overlooked her because of the career gap. Instead of letting that define her next chapter, Shivani decided to create her own opportunity.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Shivani got 500g of Scotch Bonnet peppers from a farmer selling them door-to-door. With a shortage of chilies during lockdown, she turned them into hot sauce as a way to preserve them. What started as a single bottle and an unexpected first order of 10 jars soon became Miris by Islandmom, a proudly Sri Lankan hot sauce brand.

Miris was created to “Celebrate” NaiMiris peppers (Scotch Bonnet), and introduce spiciest, real, island inspired flavors to local and international #NaiMirisAddicts. Today, Miris offers a range of naturally made hot sauces and chilli condiments, created with carefully selected unique Sri Lankan ingredients and without unnecessary additives, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors.

From a small home-grown idea, Miris has grown into a quality certified food manufacturing business, with ISO 22000:2018 certification, supplying retail, hospitality and food-service customers while continuing to develop new products and avenues to make it a truly Sri Lankan product.

As a women-led business, Miris is also committed to building a more responsible food business. Sustainability and circularity are part of how we operate; from solar-powered production facility to and energy efficient equipment, and a business model to facilitate reducing food and plastic waste are to be highlighted.

Today, Miris continues to grow with a clear vision; to put “Sri Lanka on the global hot sauce” while proving that a small, women-led food business can combine bold innovation, quality, sustainability and circular thinking.
